Spanish Interpreter Training

Training for interpreters working in health care and social agencies is being provided at various AHECs throughout the state. Target audience includes individuals who have a demonstrated competency in English and Spanish, and who currently provide interpreter services in health and human services settings. A Participant's Resource Manual is used during the training.

Look on our Calendar of Events for the following programs that are provided:
• Level I
Two-day introductory training course for community interpreters, covering such topics as role of the interpreter, different modes of interpreting, interpreter ethics, specialized vocabulary and community resources.
• Level II
One-day training course which provides additional intensive training and practice sessions.
• Provider
A 1 - 2 hour training for providers working with interpreters offered at AHEC's conferences, workshops and seminars. Target audience includes social workers, physicians, pharmacists, health educators, nurses and other professionals.

The Interpreter Trainings are part of a larger Interpreter Initiative which has been in existence since 1995. The NC Interpreter Task Force of the Bilingual Resource Group offers technical assistance and consultation on interpreting issues to health and human services agencies and providers. For information on the overall initiative, contact Jose Velez,  Interpeter Training Coordinator at the NC Office of Minority Health, (919) 715-7276.
